Does Broncos' latest signing hint team is willing to move on from star WR?

Veteran wide receiver Courtland Sutton is continuing to work out on his own while the Broncos hold voluntary offseason workouts at the team facility.

Denver's star wide receiver has made it clear that he wants a reworked contract. He has two years left on the four-year, $60 million extension he signed in November 2021 but has only $2 million left of guaranteed money.

Sutton has requested a trade with the belief that the Broncos are unwilling to meet his asking price, but the team is reportedly not interested in trading him.

"It's 100 percent voluntary," general manager George Paton said via Gabriel Parker of the Denver Post. "Sean [Payton] has talked to Courtland. I've talked to Courtland. He's in a good place and we'll just leave it at that."

However, Denver may have since changed its mind.

On Monday, the Broncos re-signed veteran wide receiver Phillip Dorsett, who was just released last Friday.

Dorsett was likely released to make space for undrafted rookie additions to the roster, but why add him back into an already crowded wide receiver room if the team is planning to eventually move on from him anyway?

He re-joins a room that has seen several new additions this offseason. Denver signed Josh Reynolds in free agency and added Oregon's Troy Franklin (fourth-round pick) and Utah's Devaughn Vele (seventh-round pick) in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Marvin Mims Jr., a second-round pick in 2023, and Tim Patrick, who tore his Achilles last year, are also returning this season. So, the Broncos can afford to move on from Sutton if they so choose. 

Trading away their No. 1 wide receiver may not be an ideal move when trying surround rookie QB Bo Nix with as much talent as possible to make him successful, but all it could take is an offer Denver can't refuse.
